Situated at the center of the UNESCO-listed Lamu Old Town, Lamu Fort is a massive defensive structure with a storied past. Built by the Sultan of Oman in the early 1800s, the fort was designed to protect the island from invaders before later serving as a prison, known locally as 'gereza.' Today, the site functions as a multi-purpose space housing a museum of Swahili culture, a library, and various local government offices. While some visitors note that the interior exhibits could benefit from modernization and better maintenance, the architectural scale of the fort remains impressive. One of the most popular activities is climbing to the top of the ramparts for sweeping views of the town's rooftops and the ocean beyond. Additionally, the entrance fee provides added value as the ticket is also valid for entry to the Takwa Ruins on Manda Island.

Lamu Fort is recognized as a significant historical landmark in the center of Lamu, though visitor opinions on its value are mixed. Many travelers appreciate the fort's rich history, noting its transition from an Omani defensive structure to a colonial prison. The museum inside offers interesting insights into Swahili culture, although several reviewers mention that the displays feel neglected and are in need of modernization. A standout feature for most is the rooftop, which provides exceptional panoramic views of the town and the sea. Some visitors noted technical difficulties with the eCitizen ticketing system, which is now required for entry. Despite some maintenance issues, the inclusion of access to the Takwa Ruins with the same ticket makes it a practical addition to a historical itinerary.
