Nestled at the southern end of Lake Kivu, it is contiguous with Bukavu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, separated by the Ruzizi River. The city is divided into two main areas: the low-density district of Cyangugu on the lake shore and the higher density industrial and transport center of Kamembe further inland. Kamembe Airport connects the city with Kigali through frequent flights. Nearby Nyungwe Forest is a major attraction, offering one of the last remaining forest areas in Rwanda and home to chimpanzees and other primates.
