Byrd Station, established during the International Geophysical Year by the U.S. Navy Seabees, was a significant research station in West Antarctica. It operated as a year-round base until 1972 and continued seasonally until 2005. The station's remote location on the West Antarctic ice cap made it a pivotal site for scientific research and polar exploration. Accessible by overland ice traverse or ski-equipped C-130 aircraft, it remains a point of interest for those studying the Antarctic region.
Summer months offer the best conditions for research and exploration activities.
Winter conditions are extremely harsh and not suitable for travel.
