Wild Nephin National Park, located in the northwest of County Mayo, represents one of Ireland's most significant wilderness areas. Spanning 150 square kilometres, the park is defined by its vast Atlantic blanket bog, which is among the largest of its kind in Europe. The landscape encompasses the dramatic Nephin Beg Mountains and includes the most remote point of land on the Irish mainland. Originally established as Ballycroy National Park in 1998, it was expanded and renamed in 2018 to incorporate the Nephin Forest, where ambitious re-wilding efforts are currently underway. As a candidate Special Area of Conservation and part of the Natura 2000 network, it serves as a critical habitat for diverse flora and fauna.
