It is situated near the internationally recognized border with Russia and serves as the center of the Dovzhansk urban hromada and Raion. The city has a population of approximately 62,691 as of 2022. Dovzhansk's origins trace back to several mining settlements from the late 18th and 19th centuries, which were united into a single city in 1938. Despite facing destructive occupation during World War II, the city has grown over time. Since 2014, it has been under the control of the Luhansk People's Republic and was annexed by Russia in 2022.
